I've never read a book that had me saying, 'What?!' and 'I had NO idea,' and 'OH HELL NO!' as much as this one did and that made it a great read for me。 I learned a lot of new culinary terms and finally understood what the different stations in a restaurant kitchen are AND I've decided to become more adventurous when it comes to eating - yes I'll always frequent my favorite places but I won't shy away from the new ones。 I will become a "regular" and a "favored" guest somewhere so I can order som I've never read a book that had me saying, 'What?!' and 'I had NO idea,' and 'OH HELL NO!' as much as this one did and that made it a great read for me。 I learned a lot of new culinary terms and finally understood what the different stations in a restaurant kitchen are AND I've decided to become more adventurous when it comes to eating - yes I'll always frequent my favorite places but I won't shy away from the new ones。 I will become a "regular" and a "favored" guest somewhere so I can order something not on the lunch menu at lunchtime and still get it。 。。。more

Kitchen Confidential showcases the fearlessness of the legend that is Anthony Bourdain - both the chef and the author。 I travelled with him from Paris to the kitchens of New York's finest and to the vibrant streets of Tokyo and beyond。 The book is so unflitered yet well written, especially if you are listening to the audiobook, which is also narrated by Bourdain, makes you feel as he is talking to you。 I would definitely read this one again, just to have this conversation with Anthony Bourdain o Kitchen Confidential showcases the fearlessness of the legend that is Anthony Bourdain - both the chef and the author。 I travelled with him from Paris to the kitchens of New York's finest and to the vibrant streets of Tokyo and beyond。 The book is so unflitered yet well written, especially if you are listening to the audiobook, which is also narrated by Bourdain, makes you feel as he is talking to you。 I would definitely read this one again, just to have this conversation with Anthony Bourdain once again。 。。。more

I read Medium Raw first and absolutely enjoyed it, rating it five stars。 Perhaps if I had started with this one, I'd have given Medium Raw a rating of three。 While I like the raw writing of the realities of the lives of restaurant life, a second book in pretty much the same manner is a bit much。 Personally, I'd give 3 stars to Kitchen Confidential but giving it 4 because if I had read it first, it would have been a 4。 I'd say that Medium Raw was more balanced。 This was more like a big reality ra I read Medium Raw first and absolutely enjoyed it, rating it five stars。 Perhaps if I had started with this one, I'd have given Medium Raw a rating of three。 While I like the raw writing of the realities of the lives of restaurant life, a second book in pretty much the same manner is a bit much。 Personally, I'd give 3 stars to Kitchen Confidential but giving it 4 because if I had read it first, it would have been a 4。 I'd say that Medium Raw was more balanced。 This was more like a big reality rant in one chapter, then a calm story in the next one。 That stole the last star for me。 Either way, it's great to read about different careers and how it actually is。 As a visitor in a restaurant, you see nothing of what actually happens inside。 I'm pretty sure that the local restaurant life in Latvia isn't as filled with cocaine and other craziness as the environment Bourdain describes in his books。 But yeah, if you're considering a career as a cook, then read this first。 Wish I had done that before entering and quickly leaving a cooking school after the first days of practice, and paying 1,5k for it (not much but could have spent it other ways)。 。。。more

Filled me with horrible flash backs of being shouted out for frying pans or how to better stack ribs in a walk in fridge。 Horrid。 Made me glad I'm not working a split shift any time soon。 Filled me with horrible flash backs of being shouted out for frying pans or how to better stack ribs in a walk in fridge。 Horrid。 Made me glad I'm not working a split shift any time soon。 。。。more

I love Bourdain。 Have always loved Bourdain, since the day I first saw him on tv mainlining street tacos off a cart in some back alley of a tropical place I’ll never be able to go to。 As a years long vet of the food industry, this read was utterly NOSTALGIC。 I was reminded of all the crude endearments hurled at friends, knife injuries, leaks and floods and bathroom debacles。 LOTS of wistfully imagining the artfully described plates and flavors。 In a time when I’m eating more stuff that comes out I love Bourdain。 Have always loved Bourdain, since the day I first saw him on tv mainlining street tacos off a cart in some back alley of a tropical place I’ll never be able to go to。 As a years long vet of the food industry, this read was utterly NOSTALGIC。 I was reminded of all the crude endearments hurled at friends, knife injuries, leaks and floods and bathroom debacles。 LOTS of wistfully imagining the artfully described plates and flavors。 In a time when I’m eating more stuff that comes out of a box, I am again inspired to make more stuff that doesn’t, while also eating more stuff that other people make, with love, for me。 Food is a love language, and Bourdain is the patron saint and savior。 。。。more

Rough, raw, wild, riotous, poetic, philosophical, exhilarating, and just superlative in oh so many ways -- but notably, in its passion for food。 Anthony's memoir portraited in such a sinful way book took me through intense places and very much obscene realities I couldn't fathom。 Had I known how beautifully written Anthony described the unimaginable pleasures food can bring - but at the same time the fact that the path deep into the woods of the food industry gets as raw and gruesome as it can g Rough, raw, wild, riotous, poetic, philosophical, exhilarating, and just superlative in oh so many ways -- but notably, in its passion for food。 Anthony's memoir portraited in such a sinful way book took me through intense places and very much obscene realities I couldn't fathom。 Had I known how beautifully written Anthony described the unimaginable pleasures food can bring - but at the same time the fact that the path deep into the woods of the food industry gets as raw and gruesome as it can get, threaded with Anthony's unabashedly wit to life - I would have read this much sooner。 In fact, I didn't read but listened to the version narrated by himself, which I would absolutely recommend and that will best convey his eloquence in the fast-paced mind, rage, intensity, and the not so often but treasured moments in the book that you can for sure tell how it feels to be in heaven。 。。。more

I liked this book far more than I thought I would as I only knew Anthony vaguely before this。 Now it is one of my favourite non fiction books mostly because of his brilliant and unique style of writing and thereby show this completely wild side of culinary life。 Having worked quite a lot in the hospitality world I could relate to a lot that he said but of course to such a lesser degree。 I'm a giant Bourdain fan now and can't wait to devour every single one of his books and am vastly more curious I liked this book far more than I thought I would as I only knew Anthony vaguely before this。 Now it is one of my favourite non fiction books mostly because of his brilliant and unique style of writing and thereby show this completely wild side of culinary life。 Having worked quite a lot in the hospitality world I could relate to a lot that he said but of course to such a lesser degree。 I'm a giant Bourdain fan now and can't wait to devour every single one of his books and am vastly more curious for other books about food and the food industry。 。。。more

3。5 but rounding up。 Bourdain is less funny and more of a curiosity to me。 A peeking being the curtain of the restaurant industry before it became cool or glamorous。 His writing is at its best when he talks about food and the way it moves him, rather than recounting misadventures。 He does have an interesting take on life, one that I’ll marinate on for some time。 Maybe even incorporate elements of into my own worldview。 I wish he were still here, cooking and talking about good, honest food。

Do yourself a favour and get the audiobook。

An interesting look into the subculture of kitchen life。 A place for outsiders who don’t live like the rest of us。 As someone who has worked in kitchens, the book made me feel like I was a part of something bigger。 Bourdain’s love of the unknown is inspiring and dangerous。

Matey Dan

I like this book however some of the kitchen parts and foods part was hard to follow if you are not a chef yourself。 For example one part he describes active service and it was hard to imagine what was going on as it was hard to picture some of the terminology he was using as I am not a chef myself。 But I did like the book and would recommend but you may be finding yourself a little frustrated at certain parts of the book。

Page turner。 You feel like you’re in Anthonys shoes in his early career, possibly relating to your passion for the work you do, or wishing you had that passion when you decided what you would do for the rest of your life。 Loved reading someone who is all out, no stops, about the craft。 Entertaining, spicy, surprisingly self reflective near the end。 Sad when he writes about addiction and low self esteem, reading this after his passing。 A bit slow after page 200, so a 4/5 seems appropriate。

Natty S

Very entertaining and even informative!

Caroline Wagner

He has a great voice and keeps me interested in his story。 Personality shines through。 I’m not a chef though and therefore a lot of the language and dialogue was over my head。 Nonetheless, I enjoyed diving into a unique culture。

A bit too testosterone fueled for me, but greatly entertaining nonetheless。 Time to throw out all those useless kitchen gadgets and buy the sharpest, biggest, heaviest knife I can handle。

Honest lol humor and wit that only service industry workers, past and present, will truly appreciate。 This book made me rethink eggs benedict at brunch and reminisce my FOH years to the point of almost picking up my apron again part time…emphasis on the almost。

I've never seen Parts Unknown, but I knew vaguely who Anthony Bourdain was。 With the Roadrunner documentary arriving soon, I thought it might be a good time to read the book that made him a star。I was quite impressed with the writing, and it makes it clear why he was such an engaging personality。 His straight talk matched with a great vocabulary and a stunning memory for detail really made the book shine。 There's a chapter late in the book where he takes about 30 pages to describe a typical day I've never seen Parts Unknown, but I knew vaguely who Anthony Bourdain was。 With the Roadrunner documentary arriving soon, I thought it might be a good time to read the book that made him a star。I was quite impressed with the writing, and it makes it clear why he was such an engaging personality。 His straight talk matched with a great vocabulary and a stunning memory for detail really made the book shine。 There's a chapter late in the book where he takes about 30 pages to describe a typical day at his restaurant。 Read that piece alone and you'll understand why the book was so successful。 He does a great job of making you feel like an insider and one of the crew。 I could never be a chef, nor do I want to be, but thankfully Bourdain has done all the hard work necessary for me and I can reap the benefits of having him as a guide。 It definitely made me want to watch a few episodes of his shows。 。。。more

I work in a kitchen and I loved it。 Bourdain truly was the Hunter S。 Thompson of chefs。 He also had a boatload of heart。 I miss him。

A well-written book, even if it is a little uneven with the flow of the memoir at times。 It shows the kitchens as cutthroat and crude, rather than the positive accounts of other chefs。 This is not a happy book by any means, maybe even serving as a warning to those who would enter this profession。Bourdain was an apologetic character who would have caught a lot of fire for his actions today, but it remains at the very least an interesting read。 Bourdain was a man not liked by everyone, but unapolo A well-written book, even if it is a little uneven with the flow of the memoir at times。 It shows the kitchens as cutthroat and crude, rather than the positive accounts of other chefs。 This is not a happy book by any means, maybe even serving as a warning to those who would enter this profession。Bourdain was an apologetic character who would have caught a lot of fire for his actions today, but it remains at the very least an interesting read。 Bourdain was a man not liked by everyone, but unapologetic with it at every turn, which makes this captivating as a characters study as well。 。。。more

This was an amazing and really unique insight into a life most of us will never have。 We all go out to eat, but do we appreciate what goes on in the kitchen? The hard work, the brutality, the types of lives these people lead to make a living, the sometimes impoverished backgrounds they come from? I doubt it。 Bourdain manages to capture the souls and voices of these people and is ONE of them, even after the success and CNN shows, he always came across as a cynical, yet humble, beautiful soul。 The This was an amazing and really unique insight into a life most of us will never have。 We all go out to eat, but do we appreciate what goes on in the kitchen?
